Kengeo - the interactive world map

About Kengeo

What is Kengeo?

Kengeo is a free web application that offers information about all countries in the world. In the "worldmap" section you can click on any country on the world map to get specific information about the chosen country. Besides of our game "Find country by name", the "Games" section will soon offer the possibility to improve your geographical skills with further games - stay tuned!

Kengeo - state of development

Today (March 2008) Kengeo is in its inception and its beta version displays some statistical data. Soon, we will upgrade this functionality. As we will be introducing some exciting new functionality on this site, come check us out again soon for new content.

What does Kengeo mean?

Kengeo is an art term, which combines the following fragments: "Ken" & "Geo". "Ken"(Scot.) stands for "Knowledge". "Geo" stands for Geography. Kengeo obviously sounds better than 'Geography-Knowledge' ;-)

Who is behind Kengeo?

Kengeo is a project of Andreas Friedrich, Boris Löffert, Oliver Pausch & Jurij Schlaht.

How did Kengeo start?

The idea of Kengeo arose a few years ago. Oliver had the vision to build a website with a clickable world map back in 2005. The thought was, that information about a chosen country would pop up after the country has been clicked on the interactive world map. So he created the first version of this map as an initial, yet very rough, outline. Due to time constraints, however, the project was put on hold until mid 2007. At this time, Kengeo found its way back from the bottom of the deck as we were looking for an appropriate project to test the Ruby on Rails Framework.

The techniques behind Kengeo

We developed Kengeo using the framework Ruby on Rails. The world map has been created with Adobe Flash.

all-inkl.com webhosting At this point we want to thank our server host 'all-inkl.com' for their support. You´re doing a great job, guys!

The meta data used by Kengeo

The majority of meta data derives from the webservice Geonames and underlies the Creative Commons License. Thanks a lot for this wonderful service! No responsibility is taken for the correctness of these informations. Bugs can be reported at bug@kengeo.com. We´re doing our best to clear any faults.

Who pays the bills?

Kengeo ist free. We try to back up server and development costs with the moderate insertion of ads and/or sponsor links. We appreciate your support, though, in the form of small donations! If you´re interested in collaborating on this project, please dont´t hesitate to get in touch with us. Thank you!
